Yara quick-start guide: find jobs, tailor your resume, apply and build your portfolio

A complete guide to Yara, the AI job search assistant: create your account, find roles in chat, tailor your resume, apply, track applications, and publish a portfolio.

Written by Abdullah Atif

Yara is an AI job search assistant that works like a personal recruiter. You tell Yara what you want in a chat, and it finds real, open roles that fit you, tailors your resume to each one, prepares your applications, builds your portfolio website, and keeps track of everything you apply to.

This guide walks through Yara from start to finish: setting up your account, every main feature, what each plan includes, and where to get help. Each section links to a detailed guide if you want to go deeper.

What you can do with Yara

  • Find jobs in chat. Describe the role you want in plain words and Yara searches live job postings, then ranks them against your background and preferences.

  • Check every role before you apply. Each role shows whether the posting is real and live, how well it matches you, and what to strengthen first.

  • Tailor your resume. Yara rewrites your resume for a specific role using only your real experience, then scores the fit.

  • Apply with an application kit. Yara reads the real application form and drafts every answer, so you can review, paste and submit in minutes.

  • Track your applications. Every role you like, start or apply to lands on one board, from Liked to Offer.

  • Build a portfolio website. Start from a template or import your existing site, edit it in place or by chat, and publish it at your own address.

  • See who views your work. Send a tracked link to each recruiter or application and see who opened it and for how long.

  • Use skills. Roast your resume, LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio, write outreach to hiring managers, and more, in one step.

1. Create your account

  1. Go to yara.so. You can type a request into the box on the homepage before you sign up.

  2. Click Sign up. Continue with Google, or enter your email address and type the 6-digit code from the email titled Your Yara login code. Prefer a password? Click Use password instead.

  3. Answer a few short setup questions: whether you are looking for a job, your name and Yara username, the roles you want, how you like to work (remote, hybrid or on-site), and your salary range.

  4. Add your resume (PDF or Word). Yara reads it so every search, score and application starts from your real background. You can skip this and add it later.

  5. Choose a plan. You can start on Free and upgrade at any time.

When setup is done, you land in chat. Not getting the code? Check your spam folder, then click Resend after the timer runs out. More detail: Getting started on yara.so. Still stuck? See Can't sign in?

2. Find your way around

Everything in Yara starts from chat. The left sidebar takes you everywhere else:

  • New starts a new chat. The shortcuts under the message box (Find Jobs, Create resume, Build portfolio, Roast and More) start the most common jobs in one click.

  • Applications is your job tracker.

  • Library holds your resumes, tailored resumes and portfolios.

  • Chats lists every conversation, so you can pick up any search or draft later.

  • Support opens a chat with the Yara team.

  • Your name (bottom left) opens Settings, where you manage your profile, job preferences, theme, emails, memory, plan and billing.

Use the + button in the message box to attach files, mention an application or a Library item, import a portfolio, or pick a skill. See Add files and context to a chat.

3. Find roles that fit you

Ask Yara for roles the way you would ask a recruiter, for example product designer roles in San Francisco, senior backend engineer jobs in New York, or open roles at Figma. Yara searches, then opens the results next to the chat.

  • Click Filter to narrow by date posted, salary, location, work type, job board, apply type and experience.

  • Click Sort to order by best match, newest or highest salary, and switch to the table view to compare roles side by side.

  • Click the heart to like a role. Liked roles are saved in the Liked column of Applications.

Tip: name the role and the city. Your job preferences in Settings (roles, locations, salary, level, dream companies) shape how results are ranked, so keep them up to date. More detail: Search for roles in chat.

4. Check a role before you apply

Click any role to open its details. Three quick reads sit at the top:

  • Real role shows whether Yara could confirm the posting is live and real, so you do not waste time on ghost jobs.

  • Match scores how well the role fits your profile and preferences.

  • The path recommends what to do next, for example Apply now or Apply, with prep, and what to strengthen first.

Below that are the responsibilities and requirements, and the Company tab shows funding, team size and links. Click ... to open the original job post or flag a dead or misleading listing.

5. Tailor your resume

Yara keeps your resume in an editor next to the chat. To tailor it for a role, click +, hover Applications, pick the role (or paste a job link), and send Tailor my resume to this role. Yara edits a copy saved for that role and tells you what changed. Your default resume stays as it is.

Tailoring a resume to a role and keeping all the changes

  • Ask for changes in plain words, such as tighten the bullets in my last two jobs or make this one page. Review the highlighted changes and click Keep all, or keep and discard them one by one.

  • Click Score on a tailored resume to see the fit score and what to improve, then Apply fixes.

  • Pick from six templates, adjust fonts and spacing, and download as PDF or Word.

Yara only uses your real experience. It does not invent jobs, skills or results. More detail: Edit and tailor your resume.

6. Apply with an application kit

Open a role and click Apply with Yara, or click the recommendation card and then Apply all changes. Yara reads the real application form, tailors your resume, writes any notes you need, adds the role to your applications and builds an application kit with a drafted answer for every question.

  1. Review the kit. Answers marked Needs you are things only you can confirm, such as work authorization or office location.

  2. Click Open application to go to the employer's form, then copy each answer across.

  3. Submit on the employer's site, then click I've applied. The role moves to Applied on your board.

Clicking Apply with Yara and opening the finished application kit

Yara never submits an application for you on outside job sites; you stay in control of every submission. See How applying works in Yara for the full walkthrough. Roles marked In Network are with companies Yara works with directly. Their button reads Apply and your application goes through the Yara team. Answers you confirm are saved under Settings, Application answers, so you never type them twice.

7. Track every application

Click Applications in the sidebar to see your board. Roles are grouped into Liked, In Progress, Applied, Interviewing, Offer, Rejected and Withdrawn.

  • Click a card to see the job, its status, your application kit, the materials you used and the chats where you worked on it.

  • Change a status from the card, or just tell Yara, for example move my Stripe application to interviewing.

  • Found a role somewhere else? Click Add with Yara and paste the job link.

8. Build and publish your portfolio

A portfolio website shows employers your work, not just your resume. In a new chat, click Build portfolio, then:

  • Template: pick a design and Yara fills it with your name, experience and projects in seconds.

  • Import: bring in a site you already have from a link (Framer, Webflow, Lovable or any site), a GitHub repo, a ZIP file or Figma frames.

Building a portfolio from the Mendocino template

Edit text and images right in the preview, or ask Yara in chat, for example move my strongest project to the top. When you are happy, click Publish. Your portfolio goes live at your Yara address, for example yourname.yara.so, and paid plans can connect a custom domain. Every edit saves a version you can go back to. More detail: Build, edit and publish your portfolio.

9. Share your work and see who looks

Click Share on a published portfolio to create a tracked link for each person (for example "Stripe recruiter") or each application. Every link is unique, so you can see who opened it, when, how long they stayed and on which device. Yara can email you the first time someone really looks.

Portfolio analytics with views, unique visitors and time on page

Open Analytics to see views, visitors and recent visits, and ask Yara how to improve the page. You can also share any chat as a read-only link to get a second opinion. More detail: Share your portfolio with tracked links and Share a chat with a link.

10. Use skills and do more in chat

Type / in the message box to open the skills menu, or click + and hover Skills.

  • /roast-resume, /roast-linkedin, /roast-github, /roast-portfolio and /roast-everything score your materials and give a fix list ordered by effort. Click Make these changes to let Yara apply the fixes it can.

  • /outreach finds the right person at a company and drafts a cold email and a LinkedIn message.

  • /build-portfolio rebuilds a site you already have into a Yara portfolio.

Typing a slash to pick the roast resume skill

Chat can also do research across several companies at once, find people by role and company, read any web page or GitHub profile, search the web with sources, and remember your preferences across chats when Memory is on. More detail: Use skills in chat and Get more done in chat.

11. Keep everything in your Library

Click Library in the sidebar to find every resume, tailored resume and portfolio you have made. Filter by Portfolios, Resumes or Drafts, search by name, and use the ... menu on a card to open, download, duplicate, set as default or archive it. Tailored resumes are named after the company, like Tailored for Stripe.

12. Plans and credits

Yara has three plans. Compare them at yara.so/pricing and switch between weekly, monthly and quarterly billing (quarterly saves up to 21%).

  • Pro ($29 a month): 100 application kits a month, role insights, every template and unlimited portfolios, portfolio import, GitHub sync, no Yara badge, your own subdomain and custom domain, tracked links and analytics, 100 Find People and email credits, Memory, and 1,000 credits a month.

  • Max ($99 a month): everything in Pro, plus unlimited application kits, 500 Find People and email credits and 3,500 credits a month.

  • Account: email, password and how you sign in.

  • Memory: custom instructions and everything Yara remembers about you.

  • Application answers: answers, links and documents Yara reuses when you apply.

  • Billing and Usage: your plan, credits, auto-reload and invoices.

Yara also works in your phone browser, with the same chat, applications, resume and settings. More detail: Manage your Yara settings and Get help, switch to dark mode, and use Yara on your phone.
